Rising motoring costs are putting lives at risk, according to new research examining how drivers are cutting corners in order to keep their cars on the road.
One in 10 have switched their insurance from comprehensive to third party only in order to save money, but far more seriously, one in three has delayed a service for their car because of financial reasons and one in five has put off changing excessively worn tyres, even as winter approaches.
The survey of 2,300 motorists, undertaken by website Carrentals.co.uk, highlights an alarming trend in the habits of British drivers. Delaying services and replacement tyres could lead to accidents that could otherwise have been avoided.
One in 10 also delays changing heavily worn brake discs or pads, potentially making the car a danger to other road users.
Rescue cover is also being hit, with 10% saying they have cancelled their service over the last 12 months, while 3% said they have driven without insurance because they couldn't afford to pay for it when it was up for renewal.
Gareth Robinson, managing director of Carrentals.co.uk, says: "Many people are having to cut back their expenses in the current financial climate, and motoring is one area that can incur hefty costs.
"Unfortunately it is also one that can directly affect the safety of not just the driver, but other motorists and road users."
